EAPG: A short explanation: Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG for short) is clear or coloured pressed glass made from around 1850 until about 1914 in matched sets. Machines for pressing glass were invented in the 1820's, but it was not until the 1860's that they were improved enough to mass produce matched table services. Sets of glassware all in the same pattern became very popular, and these sets often included sugar bowl, creamer, butter dish, goblets, tumblers, pitcher, fruit bowl, berry dishes, and sometimes relish dishes, salt and pepper shakers, cakestands, bread plates, compotes, celery vases, and other household items. There were thousands of patterns of EAPG, some produced in extensive sets and some with only a few pieces. Early writers on EAPG Glass gave names to many of these patterns, and some confusion was caused when they sometimes gave different names to the same pattern. EAPG has been very popular with collectors for many years. The covered sugar bowl above left is the Croesus pattern made by Riverside Glass Works, one of the most sought-after patterns. Some of the popular patterns have been reproduced, so buyers need to be careful. |
